Artist Muse: The Story of DLG (Dream.Love.Grow).

Dream Love Grow is my friend Mailyn’s creative project.  She is a beautiful person and is very inspiring. The video below is a long distance collaboration we did together. My friends and I sang/played music/recorded (from Ottawa). DLG and friends wrote the song and made the video (from the Philippines).

As you can see from the video, the Philippines is a very beautiful place and DLG (Dream Love Grow) would like to make it even more beautiful. She is looking for donations for a total of 16,500 CND to help reach children in under-privileged communities. The money is going to a vehicle (Mitsubishi L300 FB 2010) to enable them access to hard to reach places with in the Philippines. What DLG plans to do is teach the under-privileged children how to sing, play music and English. Here is her message below!

Dream Love Grow:
As you may or may not have known, I have been in the Philippines for a year. While it was a journey all on it’s own, I have come to learn about certain parts of the Philippines that tourists will never know about. These areas often have a large number of children all wanting the basic necessities of life and equally as important: love and education.

The parts of the Philippines I have grown fond of are the children who have been abandoned, the children who have been put into foster care, the children who have been abused or neglected, children who work and live in the landfill. These children have more spirit and more heart than any adult I’ve ever met. They are more happy than any rich person I’ve ever known, and they have nothing more than each other. If you don’t know what love is, then you will when you spend 5 minutes with these kids.

Needless to say, you can tell I really care about children.

Before I go on to explain to you why I’m writing, I thought I should share a few facts.

As a person living in the Western world, your average income for one day is the equivalent to an average Filipino’s wage for the whole month. So, if you make roughly a 76.34€/day you have made the monthly salary of an average Filipino. The average person works 6 days a week, 10 hour days. And that is only if you have the education to find a decently paying place of employment.

It’s hard to imagine.

Education is expensive in the Philippines. You have to pay to go to school from kindergarten straight through to colle12.21€ge. Health care is not free and is equally as expensive. No one can afford to be sick. Dental care is probably the last thing they think about. If you can’t afford to go to school to get educated or even go to the doctor to make sure you’re well, why would you be thinking about your teeth?

So if you can’t find the money to be educated, how can you work? And if you can’t work, how can you educate yourselves and your children? It’s a vicious cycle.

The reason why I’m writing is because I’ve come to ask for your help.

When I was in the Philippines I was bringing art to children in under-privileged communities. Sometimes my friends would join me and we would play with the children. It made everyone happy. My friend Donna Ogaro (a registered nurse working at Bigfoot) is in a band called the Rhema Creatives and they recently put on a few concerts for the children at the Albert Schweitzer Orphanage.

She and a group of volunteers visit these children regularly, as well as other communities on Cebu. They teach the kids how to sing and play music. They also teach the children English and tell them stories, encourage positivity and teach them about learning to have love both for themselves and each other.

Donna and her friends do this after working 10 hour days, every single week, 2 – 3 times a week.

Now let me tell you a bit about transportation in the Philippines. While you would think it’s inexpensive and easy to get around, it’s not always the case. Especially when you’re with a group of volunteers and you’re carrying instruments, art supplies and more. Some of the parts that the children live in are in hard to reach corners of the island.

So if you’ve kept in touch, my original idea was to build an art centre for children where they could come to learn about the creative arts, everything from painting, drawing, music, film and photography, but how would children ever be able to get to it?
It costs money for transportation!

After experiencing the travel situation myself, and then hearing stories from Donna about how they had to rent vans that cost a months salary to carry their equipment in, I became perplexed. Then one day Donna (on the other side of the world) and myself on this side of the world both had the same idea: A mobile unit that would allow us to bring all of the above to children anywhere on the island.

The vehicle that we want to purchase is a Mitsubishi L300 FB 2010 – suited for the rugged driving in the Philippines. It is large enough to fit music equipment, art supplies and more and would allow for 16 people to fit inside. It is perfect, but it is expensive. A brand new vehicle would cost about PHP718, 000 which is the equivalent to roughly 500 (depending on the value of our dollar)

DreamLoveGrow and Rhema Creatives are seeking donations to make this possible. It would not only be a vehicle for the education of the arts, but it would also allow for Donna and her dentist friends to bring free dental and health care to the children. It would allow us to visit more communities and bring strength, love and hope through our outreach programs. It would bring so much joy and good.

So please, I apologize if this is super long, but any help is greatly appreciated.
